Are you a Freaky Friday fan? I can still remember the first time I saw the Jodi Foster version back in the 70’s.  I wanted to jump into the television and help them out of their predicament. Who can forget Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan’s remake?  It seems we just can’t get enough because there have been five renditions of Freaky Friday!  Well get ready for more fun because The Disney Channel has dropped the mike and reinvented the film as a musical.

The Moms: #FreakyFridayMoms

I was thankful to be invited to the New York City Red Carpet premiere by The Moms! The day started with a lovely brunch, followed by a panel with veteran Broadway actress Heidi Blickenstaff (Katherine), Cozi Zueshlsdorff (Ellie), and Executive Producer Susan Cartsonis.

Freaky Friday- The Red Carpet Premiere:

Later in the evening we went over to New York City’s famous Beacon Theatre for the premiere.  The film is based on the book Freaky Friday by Mary Rodgers and was written by playwright Bridget Carpenter. The plot sticks to the familiar mom-daughter switch but this is a version like no other!  It is current, on trend and a musical joy.

The Verdict:

Run to the television to see Disney’s Freaky Friday! Heidi Blickenstaff is terrific as the tightly wound, controlling yet lovable mom Katherine. Cozi Zueshldorff plays (a spot on) angsty teen Ellie.  But… the pair really flex their acting chops when they trade places!  Whoa! I loved watching them feed off of each other’s energy while stuck in the “wrong bodies”.  Heidi Blickenstaff is a rad teen! Cozi Zueshldorff snapped into Mom mode at the drop of a hat.  My favorite scene involves Katherine (really Ellie) having a heart to heart with her “son” while walking their dog.  Keep an eye out for it.  No spoilers here!

Freaky Friday premieres at 8pm August 10 on Disney Channel.  It will be available on DisneyNOW and Disney Channel VOD.
