American Mom by Meredith Hale Is A Visual Delight
Mother. No other word rolls off the human tongue with such feeling. Do you call her Mom, Mommy, Mama, Madre? The emotions evoked by the word transcend language and are comparable to none. The beauty of the American melting pot is that we celebrate mothers from all walks of life. Meredith Hale’s book American Mom: A Celebration of Motherhood in Pop Culture takes our love of Mother and looks at her through the colorful lens of American History.
Mother through the Decades:
Hale leads the reader on a journey through time which is chock full of trailblazing and pioneering women. All inspiring, all mothers! She takes what could be a very long, bland history lesson and spins it into an inspirational and eye-popping feast for the eyes. The first few pictures grabbed my attention and I never turned away. The introduction begins with the iconic first Ivory Snow ad (1898). I found the book especially riveting because I had never seen the majority of these historical photographic gems before.
Other fascinating images include one of the first mother’s day cards, a portrait of “Mother Goose and posters aimed at women during each major war. “Mom Fashions Through The Decades” is my favorite section of the book. I loved the photos from the 70’s and the 80’s. Looking at the fashion of the day made me think of my own beautiful Mother. I won’t spoil the journey for you. You deserve to take your own stroll through the decades with Hale and feel nostalgic yourself. Ok, one spoiler…yes “Mom jeans” do make an appearance.
Every Mom:
American Mom reminds us that Mom was the backbone of society before she was ever given credit. Dare I say that she was certainly a feminist before anyone ever coined the term?
Everyone will find their ideal image of “Mother” within the pages of this book. Is the ideal of “Mother” for you a loving caregiver? Perhaps she is a fashionable trend setter or “Mrs Mom” the devoted wife. Maybe you identify with “Ms. Mom” the tough as nails executive. She’s all here. She’s subtly inspiring us because that’s what Mother does best.
American Mom: A Celebration of Motherhood in Pop Culture by Meredith Hale was released by Sterling Publishing on 4/3/18. I wish I had this book in hand for Mother’s Day. Every woman should have one on her book shelf. Every woman in my family will have one for their birthday or Mother’s Day. It touched me and
