Down the rabbit hole
It’s Wednesday but every day in NYC is like an Adventure in Wonderland. You never know what’s waiting for you around the next corner in this big city of mine! I go on simple walks with my family and we turn them into great adventures.
One of the more interesting things I get to see is active construction. It’s going on all the time. Skyscrapers rising and roads being paved are the norm. Cranes are everywhere and there’s scaffolding on every other block. Since I’m a curious kid I decided that I really need to know what goes on out of sight and down the rabbit hole. Forget Alice, I’m talking about what goes on under the streets of NYC. This morning I got my opportunity to see up close! As I was walking to get the bus for camp I saw a crew digging up 58th Street getting ready to replace a huge pipe!
You can google many articles about what goes on underground in NYC. Just touching the surface of what’s happening underneath our feet in the city are two huge projects. The 2nd Avenue subway is being built and a group of workers called Sandhogs are busy extending the #7 subway line to the West side. It must be pretty crowded down there with about 105 miles of steam pipes (belonging to Con Edison) making a giant maze under NYC. I can only imagine all that metal sharing space with a variety of slimy and hairy rodents! Ahhhh I wish I could go down to see the subway tunnels in person! If anyone knows a sandhog please hook me up!
I hope you can come to NYC to experience some of your own adventures but in the meantime I urge you to remain “Curiouser and curiouser.” Lewis Carroll
