February Is American Heart Month: Love Your Heart and Wear Red

February is a month we often associate with love, but it’s also dedicated to something even more important — heart health.

February is American Heart Month, a national observance focused on raising awareness about heart disease, which remains the leading cause of death in the United States. American Heart Month has been observed every February since 1964 and acts as a reminder to focus on cardiovascular health.  It is important to check your blood pressure, and manage risk factors like cholesterol and blood sugar.

A key moment during the month is National Wear Red Day, observed on the first Friday of February. This day shines a spotlight on an important truth: cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of women. Wearing red is more than a fashion choice — it’s a way to spark conversations, increase awareness, and encourage prevention.

American Heart Month serves as a powerful reminder to adopt heart-healthy habits that support long-term wellness. Simple lifestyle choices can make a big difference, including:

  • Eating a balanced, nutritious diet

  • Staying physically active

  • Managing stress in healthy ways

Stress management looks different for everyone. For me, it’s spending time with my sweet pup Ginger. For you, it might be walking, dancing in your kitchen, laughing with friends, meditating, or simply taking a quiet moment to breathe. The important thing is finding what helps you feel grounded in a busy, demanding world.

Above all, remember to love your heart. It’s the only one you have. While it may be stronger than a chocolate Valentine, it still needs daily care, attention, and kindness to keep beating strong.

This February, wear red, build healthy habits, and make heart health a priority — not just for a month, but for life.
