People Are Wild

People Are Wild do you agree? Adorable animal children try to convince their mothers that humans are just like animals in this charming picture book by author-illustrator Margaux Meganck.

People Are Wild Publisher Synopsis:

Wild creatures come in all shapes and sizes. They can be playful or loud or smelly or curious or cute—just like kids! People Are Wild turns the tables and asks what animals think of us. We may not always see eye to eye, but the more we understand each other, the better we’re able to live in harmony.

Review:

This colorful and exquisitely illustrated book flips the human-animal relationship. Young animals point out many of humans’ good qualities to their mamas who respond with caution. People are loud, messy, and smelly! They are also nosy and “such strange creatures”. When a curious elephant calf asks if he/she can keep a little girl as a pet, Mom responds no because “People Are Wild”.

People Are Wild shines the light on the similarities and differences of people and animals.  The “Wild” folks in the story are as unique and diverse as the beautiful animals on this planet.  We see light skin, dark skin, someone in a wheelchair, a car and many at play time! I’m a huge proponent of diversity in books and this one hits all the right notes. Diverse books teach empathy and understanding for others. Margaux Meganck does a fabulous job of showing children that we can be different and yet the same without being obvious about it.

“Wild Facts” at the end of the book feature the 14 animals in the book. A two page map encourage readers to think about conservation as well as further explore the animal kingdom.

Margaux Meganck’s short but sweet tale is aimed at 3-6 year olds but older children and adults who love animals will enjoy the ride through this unique safari.
