Based on a true story, The Optimist follows Holocaust survivor Herbert Heller and the unlikely friendship that transforms two lives. At 15, Herbert escaped the Auschwitz-Birkenau death march, carrying the weight of silence for six decades. When he finally breaks that silence, he forms a life-saving bond with Abby, a troubled teenager confronting her own pain. Together, they discover hope, healing, and the transformative power of being truly seen.

Our Review:

“60 years is a long time to keep a secret.”  And I can guarantee the buzz surrounding The Optimist will begin the moment audiences experience it.

Born in Czechoslovakia, Herbert Heller survived the unimaginable brutality of Auschwitz before immigrating to America to build a new life. For decades, he kept his traumatic past hidden from his family. In 2004, after receiving troubling news about his health, Heller made the courageous decision to finally share his story. From that moment on, he dedicated himself to educating students across the country, ensuring that the lessons of the Holocaust would never be forgotten.

Directed by Finn Taylor and produced by Jeanine Thomas, The Optimist deeply moved me. This is a heavy film — emotionally raw and at times difficult to watch. It is heartbreaking, yet profoundly inspiring. I found myself in tears, angry at humanity’s capacity for cruelty, and ultimately renewed with hope. This film is not for the faint of heart, but it is filled with heart. It is a story everyone should experience to honor the memory of Herbert Heller and the millions who perished in the Holocaust. May their memories be a blessing.

“Herbert’s story shows how one person can change countless lives,” said director Finn Taylor. Producer Jeanine Thomas added, “This film is the fulfillment of a promise to honor his truth.”
