Our Review:
The Soil in Jackie’s Garden is a fun book that is chock full of colorful visuals that engage young minds. The illustrations by Neely Daggett capture the plant life cycle beautifully and perfectly complement Thomas’ words. The book opens vertically to showcase a plethora of secrets beneath the surface of the soil. This is a fun way to bring the gardening process to life.
The Soil in Jackie’s Garden educates children about the environment as well as inspires them to take an active role in preserving it. The book encourages young readers to think about how they can contribute to conservation. It celebrates how learning to care for a garden and composting are rewarding experiences.
Along with Jackie, we see a young girl using crutches gardening with an elderly woman and children of various races. The characters in the book are as diverse as the community garden they are working together to bring forth. I love this art towards the end of the book because it captures the essence of sustainability and a love for nature beautifully.
If you are looking to inspire a love for nature in your kids we highly recommend this book. The youngsters will find the soil cycle fascinating and the anticipated reward of fruits and vegetables (well maybe not broccoli) irresistible.
The Soil in Jackie’s Garden is 32 pages, recommended for children 6-8 years old and available at major book retailers. It is published by Feeding Minds Press, a project of the American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture.
