5 Reasons Friends Still Resonates 25 Years Later

Friends turned 25. Oh My Gawddddd, could that BE any more unbelievable?

Do you remember where you were on September 22, 1994?  I was sitting on my family’s bright fuchsia velvet couch unwinding after a long, tiring day in the advertising grind. I just started working full time and the long hours were killing me.  My only goal for the week was to get home in time to enjoy Seinfeld on “Must See TV.” Little did I know I’d spend the next 25 years watching twenty-somethings drinking coffee on a bright orange velvet couch.

You know how it was back then.  In order to get to the good shows you had to sit through the new shows in the line up. I took the opportunity after the end of Mad About You to go get a drink.  A catchy tune blared from the living room. It sounded cool so I ran back to check it out. This new group of “Friends” danced into my world and I’ve been part of the gang ever since.

It’s 25 years later and if “Friends” is on any screen in my vicinity I immediately “pivot” and watch. From the look of Friends’ continued success in syndication and on Netflix I’m not alone. Why do we feel such a kinship with this particular group of Friends?

5 Reasons Friends Still Resonates Today

5. Chandler Bing: My Little Bing-A-Ling

What exactly does Chandler do for work? Who cares! We all have our favorite “Friend” in life and on the series. Chandler is the one that brings the light heartedness. Life gets tough and we need to keep a sense of humor to get through the hard times.  Chandler personifies persistence in a world that can be harsh. We all need a Chandler to keep our chins up and keeps us going.

4. Smelly Cat:

Good friends are the people we can let our hair down with.  If you can’t sing a dopey song about a smelly cat and not get side eye from your people then they’re not “your people”.  Friends taught us that we can have our quirks, yet fit in and love ourselves.

3. We were on a break!:

Can agree that we all need to learn to disagree? It’s alright to debate civilly and yes… still be “Friends.”

2. Pivot:

True friends should always have your back and if that means you gotta help someone move, go on get the sweat pants on. How many of you have gotten into a ridiculous situation courtesy of a friend?  What did you do?  I bet you pivoted and moved along until you remedied the situation.  “Friends” in life and on tv teach us resilience. We take those lessons with us for the rest of our lives even when we grow up and are friends may be far away.

1. I’ll Be There For You:

From the second we all saw a group of Friends frolicking around a NYC fountain we have been singing these 5 words by the Rembrandts. Not since the Brady Bunch has a tv theme song hit all the right chords and stuck with us for so long. The song sums it up. “Friends” are the family we choose for ourselves. They are the people we voluntarily spend the bulk of our time with. We grow up with them, learn from them, love and treasure them.  Just like their tv counterparts they are engraved in our hearts forever.
