A Dog’s Way Home is Pawsitively Endearing

A Dog’s Way Home is based on the best-selling book by “A Dog’s Purpose” author W. Bruce Cameron.  If you have ever wanted a dog do not go see this movie unless you are prepared to run straight to the shelter to adopt your new best friend.  It is that endearing. If you have a dog Bella will have you crying happy, sometimes ugly tears.  I went prepared with a lot of tissues which came in handy.

The Review:

A Dog’s Way Home is a sweet and adventurous tale about the bond between a human named Lucas (Jonah Hauer-King) and his fur baby Bella (voiced by Bryce Dallas Howard).  It is a tale of loyalty, love and devotion.  Separated from her owner, Bella sets off on an 400-mile journey to get back home to her “person.” Along the way, she meets new friends and brings happiness to their lives. Bella likes all of her new friends but she is determined to get home to Lucas.

Dog lovers will love rooting for Bella to find her “person.”  I found Bella’s journey home a little far-fetched.  Nevertheless, Bella had the audience in our theatre wrapped around her little paws. The dogs who play Bella are adorable and smart and I was completely smitten with Jonah Hauer-King.  The film also stars Ashley Judd, Alexandra Shipp, Edward James Olmos and Wes Studi.

The Verdict:

This is a heartfelt and charming movie, however I would recommend it only for adults and older children who can handle the emotional tone. My son is 11 and he loved the movie but there are certain scenes that he cannot stop asking questions about. He is trying to process a scene with a homeless man that was very upsetting.  Dog lovers will enjoy the “pawsitive” message about determination, loyalty and the incredibly strong bond between dogs and their human friends.
