Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day: 5 Activities For Kids

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is also known as The Day of Service. Read on to see how easy it is for kids to get involved and honor the memory of Dr. King.

Dr. King was a peaceful man who worked for racial equality and to end discrimination so it is only fitting that on the holiday honoring his name we engage in actions to benefit society. No matter how old your kids are it is very easy to get them involved. There’s no need to get too elaborate.  Below are some suggestions that can be modified for various ages.

5 Activities For Kids on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day:

    • Grab some friends and some art supplies and have a letter writing party. Make some greeting cards for seniors in a nearby nursing home. The correspondence will bring many smiles for the receivers as well as the senders.
    • Donate to a food pantry or homeless shelter. We did this every year when my son was younger. Now that he is old enough we have been serving food to the needy at a local church every year.
    • Collect books and bring to a shelter or organization that is in need of children’s books. This is a gift that will keep on giving for many years.
    • Host a toy drive. Collect gently used toys from friends and neighbors for a local school, daycare or shelter in need.
    • Save a portion of their allowance and donate to their favorite charitable cause. Can be any cause from The Ronald McDonald House to a favorite animal shelter.

No gesture is too small! A day off of school to do good is a sure fire way to honor Dr. King as well as give a boost of confidence and feeling of community to your kids.

More About Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.:

On August 28th 1963 at a historic march in Washington DC, Dr King delivered his famous “I have a dream” speech. You can watch the entire speech below:

I was able to see the impressive Dr. King Memorial in Washington DC.  The line “With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope” from the “I Have a Dream” speech served as inspiration for the memorial.  It is beautiful and peaceful just like the man.
