Instant Family Charms!

Full Disclosure, I am part of a forever family. Our family is all too familiar with the ups and downs of the adoption process. Because the subject matter is dear to my heart I went into the preview armed with a bunch of tissues. Yes…I needed them.

Non Spoiler Review:

Instant Family is a heart warming “dramedy.” The film centers around the extremely likeable Pete and Ellie (Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne) and their quest to start a family.  Instant Family is written and directed by Daddy’s Home director Sean Anders. Anders based the script on events from his own foster to adopt experience.

Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne in Instant Family from Paramount Pictures.

Once Pete and Ellie decide to foster a child, they wind up unexpectedly enamored with a set of three siblings. The film takes the viewer on a wild ride through the many emotions of an adoption process.

Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne are extremely endearing as Pete and Ellie. When everything seems to be going south Pete and Ellie rise to the occasion. Because these characters are written from the heart they feel like old friends.

The young actors in the film (Isabella Moner, Gustavo Quiroz and Julianna Gamiz) are on point. They play off of each other perfectly. It is hard to decide which child would drive you more insane as a parent. It is also hard to imagine how you couldn’t help but fall in love with these kids.

Special props to the couple’s foster support group. Some of the funniest scenes revolve around the foster training sessions. The group discussions are so good because they are honest and awkward. I am certainly glad I brought those tissues with me! Tig Notaro and Olivia Spencer’s were fantastic as social workers. Their dead pan humor had me laughing, sometimes even while I was crying.

The Verdict:

It takes a village and because this village is so endearing, audiences everywhere are sure to embrace Instant Family.
