The original and superbly animated series is created and directed by Jorge R. Gutiérrez. The 9 episode adventure blends Aztec, Maya and Inca mythology with modern-day Caribbean culture while championing girl power and inclusion.

Maya is a spirited young princess with the heart of a warrior. She embarks on a mission to fulfill an ancient prophecy to save humanity from the wrath of vengeful gods. Will Maya succeed? You’ll have to watch to find out.  In the meantime here’s a non-spoiler synopsis and the official trailer to hold you over.

Synopsis:

In a fantastical world, where magic turns the world and four kingdoms rule the lands, a brave and rebellious warrior princess named Maya is about to celebrate her quinceañera (fifteenth birthday) and coronation. Our Verdict:

Maya and the Three is an epic and bold animated adventure. The series is full of heart,  bravery and girl power. It is a story of forgiveness, family and of heartbreak. This is so much more than just another animated show.  Watch with the tweens. It’s a bit much for the youngest in the brood but kids 10 and up who aren’t squeamish will love the ride. Adults will love “Maya” for their own reasons.  The animation is inspiring and the heroine empowering. The series has given me a new mantra that I’m going to embrace permanently…”If it is to be, it is up to me!”
