Shy Robin And the First Day of School

Shy.  The word brings back memories.  I remember being the shiest child in school.  Do you have a shy child going to school for the first time? Perhaps he or she is returning for another year but hesitant?  “Shy Robin And The First Day Of School” by Jamie Kim is the perfect book to read tonight.

“Shy Robin” Synopsis:

Mom always calls Robin a big, brave hippo, but on the first day of school she just wants to hide. Even though Mom gives her a pretty purple headband to make her feel confident, as soon as she enters the classroom she retreats to a safe, quiet corner. Before long, Robin spies a young otter named Marco who is wearing purple bracelets and who seems even quieter and more timid than she is. When Marco falters while trying to say his name aloud to the class, Robin discovers that her voice can be strong when coming to a new friend’s aid. Will Marco do the same if she needed help?  This gentle story is threaded with the familiar moments of a first school experience seen through the eyes of a child. Jaime Kim captures the warmth of finding a new friend and the ways that connection can make us all more courageous, no matter how shy we feel.

Our Review:

Robin is a young hippo who finds that looking out for a friend can turn shyness into bravery.  Jamie Kim’s sweet picture book is a cheerfully illustrated story about helping others and making friends along the way. Reading this story to the kids will ibring you back to the days when everything was new and felt scary.  If you were a shy child, this story may spark the memory of a similar experience where you felt insecure like Robin. Hopefully this heartwarming tale will encourage young readers to act kindly towards others and reap the rewards of true friendship.
