We’ve been waiting since 1996 and Space Jam: A New Legacy is finally in theaters! LeBron and the Tunes will also be jammin’on HBO Max for 31 days from its theatrical release.

Space Jam 2 Trailer:

Synopsis:

NBA champion and global icon LeBron James goes on an epic adventure alongside Bugs Bunny and friends. The animated/live-action event “Space Jam: A New Legacy” is from director Malcolm D. Lee and an innovative filmmaking team including Ryan Coogler and Maverick Carter.  This transformational journey is a manic mashup of two worlds that reveals just how far some parents will go to connect with their kids.

When LeBron and his young son Dom are trapped in a digital space by a rogue A.I., LeBron must get them home safe. LeBron must lead Bugs, Lola Bunny and the whole gang of notoriously undisciplined Looney Tunes to victory over the A.I.’s digitized champions on the court: a powered-up roster of professional basketball stars as you’ve never seen them before.  It’s Tunes versus Goons in the highest-stakes challenge of his life, that will redefine LeBron’s bond with his son and shine a light on the power of being yourself. The ready-for-action Tunes destroy convention, supercharge their unique talents and surprise even “King” James by playing the game their own way.

Spoiler Free Review:

Space Jam: A New Legacy is a fun ride across the hard court.  Some will debate that the plot is light and the filmmakers relied too much on nostalgia.  Well this Looney Tunes fan fell for the bait! I loved all the classic cartoon character cameos.  All of my childhood favorites came to cheer on King James and they reeled me right in!  I won’t spoil the cameos but when I say everyone is in the house I mean everyone that’s anyone… except the one that we all really wanted.  No Michael Jordan!  Or well…was there a Michael Jordan?  No spoilers! You’ll have to see for yourself.

My son is a super fan of the original Space Jam. We are a Michael Jordan family but we all think that LeBron hit a slam dunk with Space Jam 2. Is this Shakespeare? No.  Is this a deep movie with a message? No, but the film stresses the importance of parents listening to their children about their dreams and recognizing their talents. It’s a Looney world when people can’t just enjoy a cartoon without over analyzing it.  To that I say “What’s up doc?”
