The Canterville Ghost is coming to haunt theaters just in time for Halloween! The animated reimagining of the Oscar Wilde classic will be opening exclusively in theaters on October 20, 2023.
The Canterville Ghost Synopsis:
The Canterville Ghost tells the story of a modern American family that moves into their recently purchased country home, Canterville Chase in England. But the family soon discovers the house is haunted by a ghost. Sir Simon de Canterville (Stephen Fry) has been haunting the grounds of Canterville Chase successfully for over 300 years, but he meets his match when he tries to scare away the new arrivals.

Tired of the same old Halloween movies? Then you will enjoy the animated version of the Oscar Wilde classic. The story centers on the ghost of Sir Simon de Canterville. He’s cursed to roam his sprawling castle for centuries and needs to find a courageous human in order to free himself. Virginia Otis moves into the castle and eventually the pair teams up to bring peace to the house. Do they succeed? No spoilers here…you’ll have to watch for yourself. About Oscar Wilde and The Canterville Ghost:
Oscar Wilde (1854-1900), was an Irish wit, poet, and dramatist. His reputation rests on his only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891), and his comic masterpieces Lady Windermere’s Fan (1892) and The Importance of Being Earnest (1895). He was a spokesman for the late 19th-century Aesthetic movement in England. This advocated art for art’s sake. Wilde was also the object of celebrated civil and criminal suits ending in
his imprisonment (1895–97). Wilde’s contributions to literature have solidified his status as one of the most celebrated writers of his time. His legacy continues to inspire and entertain generations of readers.
One of Wilde’s notable contributions to literature was his comedic and satirical novella, “The Canterville Ghost.” Published in 1887, it highlights Wilde’s ability to blend humor with social commentary. He explores themes such as the clash between American pragmatism and European traditions, as well as the concept of redemption and the nature of love.
