The Museum of Broadway

The Museum of Broadway is opening in the heart of Times Square in New York City on November 15, 2022. The first ever permanent museum celebrating Broadway is sure to delight NYC crowds for years to come.

The Museum of Broadway is an immersive and interactive theatrical experience devoted to musicals, plays, and the people who make them. Featuring the work of dozens of designers, artists, and theatre historians, this unique Museum takes visitors on a journey along the timeline of Broadway, from its birth to present day.

Visitors will begin their experience by entering The Map Room. The journey begins at the first play performed in New York in 1732 and continues through present day. Julie James narrates and tells the story of how the first theaters in New York City were located in today’s Financial District. After the Civil War they spread north along Broadway before finally settling in the area now known as Times Square. This migration comes to life through projection onto a deconstructed cityscape, designed by Bravo Media. Guests will also hear a new arrangement of “Give My Regards To Broadway,” performed by The Broadway Sinfonietta.

The fun continues with a visual history experience of Broadway.  Dazzling costumes, props, renderings, rare photos, videos, take center stage. The Museum will highlight more than 500 individual productions from the 1700s through the present. Guests will learn about the pivotal shows that transformed the landscape of Broadway. The moments that pushed creative boundaries, challenged social norms, and paved the way for today’s Great White Way. Some of the exhibits featured include Cabaret, HAIR, The Lion King, The Phantom of the Opera, The Producers, Rent, The Ziegfeld Follies, Oklahoma!, The Wiz, Ain’t Misbehavin’, and more.

Opening Exhibit:

The Museum’s first special exhibit will be The American Theatre as seen by Hirschfeld. The exclusive exhibition, takes visitors through nine decades of Hirschfeld’s iconic images of theater.  25 drawings and prints from 1928 to 2002 will bring visitors up close and personal to original productions of Fiddler on the Roof, The King and I, Beauty and the Beast and more.

Hirschfeld created more posters for shows than any other artist. These are featured on two dedicated walls in the exhibition, alongside iconic album covers and programs. Visitors will be able to sit in a replica of Hirschfeld’s barber chair where he drew all the finished drawings in his career.

Visitors are welcome to create a Hirschfeld portrait of themselves with a new app created exclusively for this exhibition. Hirschfeld coloring pages will also available for younger guests to enjoy.
